A Grand Island man who left children unattended at his mother's day care has been given two years of probation.
Published reports reveal that 21-year-old Andrew Mitchell was sentenced on Wednesday.
He had pleaded no contest to contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He'd originally been charged with 10 counts of child abuse.
Mitchell's mother, Tammy Heaton, operates the day care. Prosecutors say she went home to sleep on Nov. 12, 2009, leaving her son in charge of 10 children ages 4 to 12.
When a woman arrived about 11 p.m. to drop off her children, she
found the day care unattended. Prosecutors say Mitchell returned after police arrived and said he'd been at a friend's home next door.
