Officials at the Homestead National Monument of America near Beatrice are seeking descendants of homesteaders or others involved with the Homestead Act of 1862.
The federal law granted free land to people who promised to live
on it and work it under provisions of the law. The 150th anniversary of the law is next year.
Beatrice radio station KWBE says one volunteer is needed from
each of the 30 states where the Homestead Act was used.
Those volunteers will carry their state's flags in a 150th national
commemoration event on May 20 next year in Beatrice.
Volunteers also will be asked to carry their state's flags during next
summer's Homestead Days Parade, in Beatrice.
