The state Department of Health and Human Services says the hotline received 28,666 calls reporting child abuse or neglect last year.
That's up from 24,173 in 2006.
Out of those tips, the state says 3,404 cases of child abuse or neglect were confirmed in 2010. Those cases involved 5,169 children.
Todd Reckling is the director of child and family services for HHS. Reckling says he wants to remind people to report possible abuse by calling 1-800-652-1999 or making a police report.
State officials say some warning signs of abuse might be children with unexplained injuries or without enough food or clothing. Leaving a child younger than 6 unattended is also a warning sign.
