Nebraska Ordinance Plant Cleanup Finished

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it has completed the cleanup of contaminated soil at the former Nebraska Ordnance Plant near Mead.

Project manager Kristine Stein says all that's left of the Superfund project is cleaning up groundwater.

She told the Lincoln Journal Star on Wednesday that conditions at the former munitions plan are "within the acceptable risk range" as determined by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The corps began a preliminary investigation of contaminated soil and groundwater at the 17,250-acre site in 1991. The dirt and groundwater there had been contaminated with explosive compounds and toxic solvents.
