In Tuesday's general election Nebraska voters overwhelmingly supported two new amendments to the state Constitution. They also reaffirmed term limits on state senators and hostility to a proposal to raise lawmakers' pay.
Amendment 1 allows for impeachment of civil officers for misdeeds committed before they took office. The amendment comes after University of Nebraska Regent David Hergert was accused of breaking campaign laws in 2004. Nebraskans overwhelmingly supported Amendment 1 with 83% voting in support of the amendment.
Similar strong support was shown for Amendment 2 which enshrines hunting and fishing rights in the state constitution. Seventy-seven percent of Nebraska voters supported the change.
However, Nebraska strongly opposed loosening rules on term limits. Sixty-four percent voted against allowing state senators to serve three four-year terms, instead of the current two.
And Nebraska voters soundly rejected a pay increase for state senators, with 68 percent voting against the proposed amendment.
