Authorities say a southeast Nebraska couple kept a 3-year-old boy in a makeshift cage for hours at a time.

23-year-old Louis Arms and 22-year-old Kelsi Gaube were arrested and face charges of child abuse.

An Otoe County jailer said Arms remained in custody on Tuesday. Gaube has bonded out of jail. A phone listing for her couldn't be found. Court records don't list attorneys for either of them.

All of this began to come to light on Saturday when the Otoe County Sheriff's Department responded to a domestic dispute involving Arms and Gaube.

An affidavit states that a deputy took Arms inside to talk. The deputy found marijuana and paraphernalia.

Arms then took the deputy into a child's room to show him the makeshift cage. An affidavit states that he and his girlfriend refer to it as "prison."

Arms told the deputy that his 3-year-old son is often kept in prison for several hours at a time, without any toys or even water.

Neighbors tell WOWT 6 News that Arms and Gaube kept to themselves and have lived there for about a year. Those neighbors also told us they’re embarrassed that this happened in their town.

Arms and Gaube were both charged with child abuse and possession of drugs and paraphernalia.

Arms was the 3-year-old boy's biological father. The boy and a 17-month-old child are now in the care of relatives.
