Nebraska Road Deaths Outpacing Last Year
Twenty-six people died on Nebraska roadways in August. That's six more deaths than August of 2011. The Nebraska Department of Roads released the fatality data Tuesday.
So far, from January through August of 2012, 136 people have died in 127 highway crashes.
The 26 fatalities occurred in 24 crashes. Seventeen of the 18 vehicle occupants killed were not using safety belts.
Three of the fatalities occurred on the Interstate, 14 happened on non-Interstate highways,
and nine took place on local roads. Nineteen of the fatalities occurred in rural locations.
Nine of the fatalities were age 24 or younger. Five of the fatalities were motorcyclists, while three of the fatalities were pedestrians.
One of the fatal crashes was a collision with a train. Six were head-on collisions.
Eighty-four of the 106 vehicle occupants killed in 2012 were not wearing safety belts.
