Nate LaFave's Mom Honors Son At "Mom Prom"

Mt. Michael held its annual “Mom Prom” Wednesday night, but for one mom, her go-to date, couldn’t be there. The death of her son left her wondering whether or not she should go, but in the end she decided going to the prom would be a way to honor her son.

Beth LaFave arrived at the prom in style, her friends who are other moms of Mt. Michael students, got a limo and they all showed up the event together.

Nate LaFave, who died in an October vehicle crash, is seen in a Mt. Michael promotional video explaining that “Mom Prom” was one of his favorite events. Because of that, Beth decided to go.

“It’s really hard. Really, really hard to be here without Nate,” Beth explained.

But she didn’t go alone. One of Nate’s many good friends, Tony Tong, is a foreign exchange student. He didn’t have a mom to go with, so Beth stepped in.

“He didn’t have a mom that could come, and I don’t have a son to go with here anymore, so it was a good fit,” Beth said.

Tony told WOWT 6 News he is flattered and comforted that Beth asked him to go. “Nate was my best friend. When I heard the news I couldn’t believe it. It’s hard that he is no longer with us. I miss him so much,” Tong said.

Beth wore a locket to the dance with Nate’s picture on it. She said, “A lot of things are hard, but I have found the more things I follow through with will be a little easier.”

She told WOWT 6 News after the dance, it was the hardest thing she’s done since her son’s passing, but that it was the most rewarding at the same time.”
