Burglary Disrupts Business At County Treasurer's Office

If you had some business to take care of at the Douglas County Treasurer's Office near 108th and Maple in Omaha Friday morning you probably got turned away. The office was open, but all the computers were down. A burglary a few doors away caused problems for everyone in the complex.

Business was supposed to start at 8 am., but because of the burglars it wasn't business as usual until Friday afternoon. No Internet service meant no customer service.

“Fortunately, even though it is a Friday, it's not a bad time of the month for volume,” said chief deputy Tim Cavanaugh. “If this was near the end of the month this would have been much worse.”

Burglars had cut all the phone and cable lines on the back of the building around 4 a.m. They then broke into a vacant bay in the complex and started busting through walls, starting with the American Family Insurance Agency.

“It looks like they went that way, but we're not real sure about that, but then they came back in the bathroom and he's already sealed it up, but they went through there to get to the beauty supply shop next door,” said insurance agent Mary Vacanti.

The last business broken into was the Tobacco and Liquor Outlet where the suspects were caught on surveillance video. Even though the phone and cable lines had been cut, the store's wireless security system notified police. The store owner says even though they had loaded up on cigarettes and alcohol, they dropped most of it and ran when police arrived.

All the businesses are trying to get back to normal and try to keep this from happening again. “Time of year that everybody has to be a little more vigilant and try to watch out for everybody else,” said Vacanti.

Internet and phone service were restored to most of the building by 1 p.m.
