The murder suspect in a 1980 killing appeared in Douglas County Jail Court Wednesday morning. During the arraignment, the prosecution laid out the evidence against 52-year-old Oscar Hernandez.
Hernandez is accused of murdering 29-year-old Vickie DeAnda on September 11, 1980. Five days later, a warrant was issued for Hernandez's arrest, but he wasn't found until August 17, 2012 when he was trying to cross over the Mexico border illegally into a rural area of New Mexico.
In court, the prosecution said after being read his rights, Hernandez admitted to slitting DeAnda's throat. They allege after the killing, Hernandez stole DeAnda's vehicle and other belongings and fled the area.
Hernandez is being held without bond and could face the death penalty if convicted. Hernandez will have a preliminary hearing on September 17th.
