A judge has ordered Laron Jones to be held without bond for the death of Brandon Samuels last week but the victim’s friends worry that Jones may soon be back on the street. That’s what happened the last time he was accused of murder.
Samuels was wounded in the neck during a party at a residence near North 24th and Ida streets. He was taken to Alegent Creighton University Medical Center where he died. Jones was arrested.
Josue Sanchez was at the party when the gunfire broke out. He’d been kicked in the head during a fight and he remembers the sound of the gunfire.
“I think they shot in the air to scare them and then started to shooting at the house," he said. He tells WOWT 6 News the only reason he got involved was because a girl had been mistreated that night.
“Wow, are we just going to let these guys beat this girl in the yard?"
Much of what followed is a blur.
“Someone unloaded a clip and fired at the house. And I thought it was going to be massacre on the porch because everybody was the on the porch."
His friend, Brandon Samuels, was killed.
What bothers Sanchez now is the history of the man arrested for the killing.
Sanchez told us, “I heard they were showing up at the girl's house already trying to intimidate people from showing up for court."
Laron Jones has been in the Douglas County jail for murder before. In November 2011 Damian Cleghorn had been shot. More than a year later Omaha police charged Jones with murder. Last September the state had to dismiss the charges because witnesses would not testify against Jones.
Sanchez knows the history of fear and wants to make sure justice is served in the case of his friend’s death.
