More than 50 firefighters from Grand Island, Hastings and Saint Paul, Nebraska battled a massive building fire in Grand Island Sunday night.
Just after 8 p.m., an auto shop caught fire and the flames spread to a nearby thrift shop near 3rd and Elm Streets.
Flames shot from the buildings until well after 10 p.m. That was when crews knew the structures couldn't be saved.
"We pulled all the people outside and fought the fire from the outside of the building," said Grand Island Fire Chief Cory Schmidt. "Fire conditions were such that we weren't willing to risk anyone's life to save a building."
Crews extinguished the blaze by 11 p.m. and checked for hot spots all night long. No injuries have been reported. A state fire marshal will now investigate the cause of the blaze.
