A local business is working hard to make Mother's day unforgettable to victims of domestic abuse and they want the public’s help before the big day.

Connie Windhorst works for Two Men and a Truck and is helping spearhead their “Movers for Moms program.

She's on a mission and has suffered abuse firsthand.

“I didn't know where to turn quite honestly and there's a stigma that goes along with it of embarrassment,” says Windhort.

“Then when you finally say something to family or friends that's when they start coming around and asking how can we help. This is a way to pay back.”

The goal is to collect clothing and other goods for women at the Lydia House.

“I think its an awaking to some of the people who are donating that even the smallest items that they could pick up whether it be toothpaste or toothbrush, a hairbrush things like that things like that, that really don’t cost very much but they mean a lot, a lot to these ladies.”

When some women flee an abusive situation they leave with just the clothes on their backs.

Windhorst picks up the donations from sites across the metro. She then delivers them to the Lydia House donation drop off.

Last year movers for moms brought in more than 15,000 and so far this year they've brought in 3,000 and are hoping for more.

Half of the women who stay at the Lydia House have been physically abused.

James Cummings of the Lydia House says getting everyday items that are easily taken for granted is a special treat.

“To get a new outfit, to get perfume, for a lot of them they haven't had that stuff before and to be able to get that kind of thing is great, they're so excited.”

Movers for Moms is still accepting donations at all Hy-vee stores and YMCA’s until Thursday.

They also taking donations at Adams Elementary, Omaha South Magnet School, and Carriage Hill Elementary.
