Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month!

Motorcycle safety awareness month is a national initiative aimed at getting motorists and motorcyclists to “share the road” with each other. Motorcyclists have the same rights and privileges as any other motorist on the roadway.

“As the weather improves, more and more motorcyclists are hitting the roads,” said Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis. “And with that in mind, pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers of all vehicles, including SUV’s, passenger cars and trucks, need to be extra attentive and make sure they share the road.” A motorcycle is one of the smallest vehicles on our roads, often hidden in a motorist’s blind spot. Every driver needs to aggressively look for them before changing lanes or merging with traffic.

In 2011, there were 23 motorcycle fatalities in the state of Nebraska. There are over 50,000 motorcycles registered in the state of Nebraska and 4.3 deaths per year for every 10,000 registered motorcycles. Since January 2012, there have been five motorcycle fatalities in Nebraska. Sheriff Davis said, “The Nebraska Motorcycle Safety Program is hoping to reduce motorcycle related fatalities by offering motorcycle safety training to the public.” Nebraska Motorcycle Safety Training offers classes from April 2012 through the end of September 2012. Classes are held at the Sarpy County Courthouse, 1208 Golden Gate Drive, Papillion NE.

In 2011, state sponsored training programs issued 2056 basic rider certificates in the state of Nebraska. Sheriff Davis hopes to increase the number of trained riders by offering classes through the Nebraska Motorcycle Safety Training Program.
