Motorcycle Helmet Law Remains Controversial

All motorcycle riders in Nebraska are still required to wear a helmet. But the debate on the state helmet law continues.

A bill in the legislature that would have repealed Nebraska's motorcycle helmet law will not be debated this session. But it could come up next year.

While Gloria Gard doesn't think the government should require helmets, she wouldn't get on her motorcycle without one.

“I believe my head is a very important piece of real estate,” said Gard. “And that helmet is an important safety feature for me. Cars have airbags to help protect us. That helmet's kind of like my airbag.”

The state of Michigan recently repealed their helmet law. And a recent study in that state showed a 20 percent increase in medical claims for motorcycle injuries.
