A LaVista police officer became concerned when a driver stopped at a busy intersection didn’t go when the light turned green. It was rush hour just after 7am.
Officer Steve Walter checked the driver and found him passed out over the center console. Officer Walter said the car was still in drive and the driver had his foot on the brake. After Officer Walter knocked on the passenger window the driver suddenly tried to drive through a red light at busy 84th and Harrison in LaVista. Officer Walter said, “It’s almost like he awoke from a deep sleep and said where am I and boom I’m gone.”
Officer Walter got the driver’s attention before he drove through the intersection.
After field sobriety tests, 19 year old Joseph Bartlett was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. The preliminary blood alcohol test registered .145 nearly twice the legal limit. He had another drunk driving arrest less than a month ago.
Officer Walter said the teenaged driver was headed to work when the incident occurred at just after seven in the morning.
