Thieves take advantage of a volunteer group helping to rebuild one woman's life. The volunteers are trying to see the brighter side of a $20,000 burglary.

“This was all locked up. We've got two padlocks here and they cut the security system here,” said Ryan Johnson. Johnson found the “One Family, One Home, One Purpose” trailer missing a few tools Friday morning. Thieves broke in overnight, taking three generators, some drill sets and an entire trailer full of tools.

“It just seemed like they were in a big hurry, they were out in the middle of the country and just wanted to get what they could,” said Johnson. He and his crew are working to rebuild Sandy Umphrey's home that was destroyed by last summer’s tornado.

“I thought, how could you do something like that? All this time it's been sitting here and we haven't had any problems and then to come in and steal something like that when these guys would probably have given it to them if they just asked,” said Umphrey.

“This person made a mistake and they chose the wrong path. I just wish that they could have asked,” said Johnson.

Still, they continue to build, seeing a blessing in all of this. “Had we not started drywalling last night, more than likely our tools would have been here,” said Johnson. He says he is thankful that this theft is only a small piece of a bigger picture. “Another storm, we are to praise Him in the storm and that's what we're doing now."

Johnson says they are working to replace a few of their items. He says they found a lighter the thieves dropped and left at the scene.
