If you use eastbound Pacific Street near Elmwood Park, you probably already know about construction in the area. Well lane closures are about to get worse.
Metropolitan Utilities District has been replacing water mains and gas mains in the area since October. One eastbound lane of Pacific from 66th to 64th street has been closed for awhile. But a new phase of the project will close one eastbound lane from 66th all the way to 60th for about four weeks.
The bulk of the project has been in the neighborhood on the south side of Pacific.
"It's been continuous," says Susan Borchers who lives on the corner of 66th and Pacific. "At one point the entire neighborhood was blocked. And I had problems getting my son to school, and had to take a huge detour route to get him there."
Borchers says she's anxious for the project to be done.
"Many times I've had to leave, and my driveway has been blocked by cement trucks," she said.
Tyler Wieland has lived at 64th and Pacific for 11 years.
"It's busy," said Wieland. "And people speed up and down the street."
It's already a challenge for him to pull out of his driveway. That's why he backs his car in to park it. He expects the lane closure to make things even worse.
"It sometimes takes a while to get out. And yeah, with it down to one lane it will take even longer. Because I'm sure there will be a line of cars coming," he said.
MUD sent letters to area residents last October when the project began. That letter is posted on MUD's website. The link below will take you to that letter.
