A jury in Madison, Wisconsin Thursday found a woman guilty of kidnapping a newborn and leaving him outside an Iowa gas station last February.
Thirty-one-year-old Kristen Smith of Aurora, Colorado was on trial for the abduction of her nephew, 4-day-old Kayden Powell, from a Beloit, Wisconsin home.
Police arrested Smith hours after finding the baby in a crate outside the gas station along Interstate 80 near West Branch. The child was alive and well despite being left in frigid temperatures for more than 24 hours.
Smith claimed Kayden's father asked her to take the boy because the parents were moving in with her soon. Prosecutors said Smith was actually scheming to pass Kayden off as her own son. Defense attorney Matthew Noel said Smith already has four children and a stepchild, so she'd have no need to steal a child.
