Man on Motorcycle Hits Deer & Survives

We know the damage a deer can cause when we're driving. One Iowa man knows his odds were even worse on a motorcycle -- that's why he's so thankful to be alive.

"I bought this one a few weeks ago," said Kevin Sullivan of Dunlap, Iowa, pointing to his motorcycle. "I don't remember the wreck."

It was June 2009 when he crashed into a deer on Highway 75 near Interstate 680. Sullivan was on a motorcycle and needed a medical helicopter. "I talked to the guy who witnessed it and he said the deer jumped and I hit the rear part of him with my head and flew 200 feet."

Kevin Sullivan knows he got lucky. "My top vertebrae was cracked and my skull was cracked. And I was in a coma for 10-days."

Recently, he revisited the scene of the crash for the first time on another motorcycle -- hoping to confront any fears. "My mind has to work really hard."

Getting back on the bike was easy compared to other parts of recovery. "I couldn't remember what peanut butter was called. It's a strange feeling."

Statistics show we're more likely to hit a deer in Iowa than Nebraska -- but both states are in the top three.

Nebraska Game and Parks officials estimate there are more than 300,000 deer in the state. They're anticipating hunters will kill 90,000 of them this year.

Experts say the most dangerous thing we can do is swerve to get out of the way.

We're nearing the peak of deer breeding season -- meaning the bucks will be chasing the does making for even more unpredictable paths.

Hunters know there are an excessive number of deer. In Nebraska, 141,000 deer permits have been issued -- that's a record.
