41-year-old Ross Ohrt of Omaha has been sentenced to 30 to 35 years in jail. He is convicted of sexual assault and enticing a child.
WOWT 6 News had the only reporter at the hearing Wednesday.
Ohrt took a plea deal after admitting to creating a type of barter system where he would give his girlfriend's young daughter points for sexual acts or photos and those points would earn her gifts.
During the hearing Ohrt said he was remorseful, but the girl's mother didn't buy it. "I believe he believes it as much as he can, but I still think he's more sorry that he was caught then for what he did."
In order to protect the victim we are not naming her parents.
The victim also had her chance to speak. In an emotional statement she said she had looked at Ohrt as a father and best friend. She said it's been a struggle for her ever since and she still has nightmares.
It was a tough thing for her biological dad to hear. "To take what a dad represents as someone that stands by their kids and you know helps guide them and to twist that into something so perverse, it's just unfathomable how someone can do that to a kid."
The family was hoping for a maximum sentence of 40 to 50 years in jail, but they said they are okay with the final ruling of 30 to 35 years.
The victim's mom said, "I am satisfied." Her dad said, "I wish it would have been a little bit harsher, but you know the fact that he's going away for a long time and our family can start to heal is really the only thing that's on my mind at this point."
They hope now their daughter can start to get some closure, but they say it's going to be tough and she'll have to live with his actions for the rest of her life.
Ohrt will be eligible for parole after 16 1/2 years because of the good time law.
