Man Posts Bond, Walks Free Twice in 9 Days

An Omaha man posted bond and gets to walk free twice in nine days after being accused of shooting at the building where his wife works.

Ryan Zimmerman, 34, is also accused of multiple protection order violations. But after posting $5,000 bond on the shooting charge, it’s not enough to keep him behind bars. It's a vicious circle that local advocacy groups say needs to be broken.

In the span of two months, Zimmerman violated five protection orders that were filed against him. Most were filed by what an Omaha Police report describes as "his soon to be ex-wife."

Court documents show Zimmerman's alleged relentless pursuit of his wife and two children, including domestic abuse and harassment.

What set off the new string of charges?

Omaha Police say, in early November, Zimmerman shot at two window washers and the windows of ConAgra in downtown Omaha.

According to Omaha Police reports, Zimmerman is charged with two counts of felony assault and two weapon charges. Reports say his wife didn't report the previous protection order violations. Police reports say, "due to the fact of the additional evidence recently obtained, including the most current, the suspect has shown he is a credible threat, therefore booked for stalking as well.

"Community in general just likes to stereotype victims, just leave and it's that easy and it is not that easy," Tara Muir says. Muir, with the Domestic Violence Council in Omaha, says her office is involved with these types of threat assessments. However, Muir wants to target the violence sooner, before it gets deadly. "A community response team's goal is to not have that victim have to climb the mountain, or to go to extraordinary measures to try and get safety in her life,” Muir says.

Zimmerman is scheduled to be back in court December 12th.
