A man was found safe as firefighters and police searched the Missouri River after someone was reported to be floating down the waterway Saturday night.
The police helicopter aided in the search near the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge around 9:30 p.m. The man managed to climb out of the water under the I-480 bridge. He appeared to be okay as he walked to an ambulance to be checked.
“We're really glad that our fire boat was put to good use, that's a good piece of equipment,” said OFD Battalion Chief Dan Olsen. “We wouldn't have been able to locate the individual under the bridge if we didn't have that equipment tonight."
The Omaha City Council initially sank a proposal to accept a donated speedboat in 2010. A new, donated boat joined the fleet last year.
