A 50-year-old man has been given life in prison with no chance of parole for strangling his neighbor.
Jerome Power, of Cedar Rapids, had been convicted on Nov. 20 of first-degree murder.
Power was found guilty of strangling Doris Bevins in her home in September 2010. Police found Power hiding inside as they responded to a 911 call from Bevins' friend who was talking to her on the phone when she was assaulted.
Prosecutors say Bevins, who was 68, was strangled with pajama pants found in her apartment. Investigators say they think Power intended to rob Bevins and say they found Bevins' cellphone and charger in one of Power's pockets.
Power says he found Bevins unconscious.
