Many Heartland residents are seeing higher than average water bills this time of year, but one man allegedly tampered with the monitoring device at his home to avoid paying for water usage.
Fifty-two-year-old Lorene Garrett is charged with theft by avoiding water measurements, which is a misdemeanor.
According to investigators, the Ashland Police Department got a tip that Garrett may have tampered with his water meter. Officers went to his home on June 14. They determined that the electronic measuring device had been changed so it would not record water usage.
Garrett is expected to appear in court on July 24. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of three months in prison.
