He's accused of committing 14 robberies over just a few days and says he was just trying to steal money for his kids. Deon Stewart talked to WOWT from inside the Douglas County Jail.
“It only went one way for me,” said Stewart.
21-year-old Stewart admitted to as many as 14 robberies.
“I know it was the wrong thing that I was doing. But it was right for just me,” said Stewart.
He told reporters he needed money for his five kids.
“I was just doing it for the one thing, that's just for the silver and gold,” said Stewart.
Three of the robberies happened within 17 minutes Sunday morning.
“I wasn't satisfied with just one. I wasn't satisfied until I saw my riches,” said Stewart.
And when Channel 6 told him the robberies terrified several victims, he was surprised.
“What I did to them, people did the same to me,” said Stewart.
He said he didn't want to get a job to earn money. Instead, this is how he'd get it.
“To show them people that all my money that I lost from all these people in the streets and I got it all back. And I’m happy I got it all back because I had to fall so hard to get it back,” said Stewart.
Now he says he is sorry for anything he did to scare the victims.
“I’m really sorry that I made them feel that way. And if I could apologize that I am sorry for how I made them feel,” said Stewart.
Stewart said his gun was loaded some of the time but he never planned to hurt anyone. He said most of the places he hit he'd been to before and recognized some of the people who were working.
