Tree clearing operations are already drastically changing the appearance along Highway 75 from Avenue B north in the Plattsmouth area.
The Cassgram reports that work is in advance of the four-year highway expansion project that will upgrade the highway to expressway status between Avenue B and Bay Road, and to freeway status north of Bay Road. Hawkins Construction officially begins its contract days in less than three weeks and roads officials are already asking motorists for their patience and to plan ahead for traffic delays.
Rick Fisher of the Nebraska Department of Roads, the project manager, said there may be some culvert work done yet in March and utility relocation is underway. “We have utility conflicts at several locations and we are addressing those now daily to get as many resolved as we can before construction.”
“April 2nd is when we dive in to construction,” said Fisher. It will be a marked construction zone. The speed limit will be 50 mph and fines will double for those ticketed for speeding.
“Avenue B and Oak Hill Road, that’s one of the locations where work will be from the get-go,” he said.
Bestmann Drive off Oak Hill Road will be relocated to behind the commercial buildings.
Not counting some short closures as needed, the only longer term intersection closing will be Avenue B on the east side of Highway 75. That will close in early April and reopen sometime in June this year. “Bay Road and Webster Boulevard—we’re going to be able keep them open,” said Fisher.
