More work needed and the cost of Plattsmouth’s Main Street Corridor Improvement Project goes up. Figures supplied by HDR engineering show that with the change order approved by the Plattsmouth City Council this week the project is now 40% over the original contract amount.
The Cassgram reports the original contract sum was $4,185,394; this week’s change order added $628,689 making the current contract sum $5,862,105, according to HDR.
The largest parts of the change order costs were for vault closures and site conditions that crews encountered, said Chris Koenig of HDR. More vaults (old coal chutes and such) were uncovered as the project progressed westward into the 6th Street area, including a very large one by the Fitzgerald Hotel, said Koenig. These were in the street right-of-way, he explained, and had to be properly closed to finish the project correctly.
There was also a considerable about of debris that had to be extricated from the ground underneath 6th Street and that added to the cost.
