An immigrant family escaped a war and came to Omaha, but their identities aren't safe even in America.
Ramiza Becirovic and her husband are safer after fleeing Bosnia 15 years ago, but their daughter says thieves forged their way into her parents' checking account.
"They work two jobs and someone steals money from them that hurts me so much," Amarela Becirovic said.
Jamile Becirovic put bill payments in their curbside mail box and thieves stole checks to make a forgery. While mailing bills curbside is convenient, it also tells theives there's probably signed checks in inside that can be altered.
"They clear the ink and rewrite, or they'll print up their own check using the account information listed on the bottom," Detective Matt Barrall of Sarpy County said.
Thieves wrote a forged check for more than $800 on the family account. The bank reimbursed cash, but a collection notice for the purchases came in the mail.
Investigators hope video from an Office Depot store will show one or more bad guys passing the forged checks. Two other checks stolen from the mailbox have not turned up, but the account has been closed.
