An Omaha man was arrested for assaulting a police officer and child neglect after his 4-year-old was found wandering outside alone Friday afternoon.
After speaking with the child, two officers located the child’s residence near North 78th and Izard streets. The door was unlocked and nobody was home. Police called the mother, who told them the child’s father was supposed to be home watching the child. The father was called and returned home.
He was angry and would not cooperate with officers when they tried to verify his identification and notified him he was going to be cited for child neglect. The man began to fight with the officers and received a cut to his face during the struggle when his glasses broke. The suspect was handcuffed and put in a police car where he spit blood on one of the officers.
Forty-one-year-old Mark Hanthorn was taken to Methodist Hospital for treatment of his cut and was later booked for assault on an officer with bodily fluids, misdemeanor child neglect and resisting arrest.
The child was released to the mother.
