Customers of the Omaha Metropolitan Utilities District will pay higher prices in 2014, but the increases are not large.

The elected Board of Directors today approved a 2.4 percent price increase for natural gas. The average customer will pay $1.24 more a month for gas.

The charge for water is being increased 5.5 percent. The average water user will pay an additional $1.25 a month.

In a news release MUD says the water hike is needed, "...to cover increased operational costs in 2014 primarily related to rising employee costs, including wages, healthcare and retirement insurance expenses."

The gas increase is needed "to build cash reserves" as the utility prepares to issue more bonds.

The two increases will bring in a combined $8.1 million in 2014.
