A Benson High Magnet School student was found in possession of a loaded firearm on school property Friday. It was confiscated by the school Resource Officer and no one was hurt.
The following message detailing the incident was sent out to parents and guardians Friday afternoon.
"Dear Benson High Magnet School Parents and Guardians:
"We want to inform you of an incident that occurred at school today—Friday, October 11th.
"A Benson High Magnet School student was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm on school property after having been given that firearm by a second student. As soon as administrators were made aware of the situation, the School Resource Officer confiscated the weapon and, in turn, immediately notified police. Police arrived quickly, took the gun, and arrested both students.
"Neither student made any specific threats. No shots were fired. No one was injured.
"We want to stress that Benson High Magnet School students’ safety was maintained throughout this situation. Building staff responded quickly, efficiently, and effectively to ensure student safety.
"Please be assured that the safety of students, faculty, and staff is always a top priority at Benson High Magnet School. We appreciate your continued support in encouraging your children to make appropriate and safe decisions—and to report anything suspicious to a trusted adult.
