The Lincoln Public School district says its enrollment grew 1.8% this year to a new record high. The official enrollment number for the 2011-2012 school year stands at 36,485. Enrollment has grown 9.2% over the past five years.
In its official news release on the subject, LPS turned the announcement into one of those dreaded math questions. If the student population of LPS were a city, where would it rank in the state in terms of size? The answer: Fifth. It would be behind Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue, and Grand Island.
Of course, if you add the notion that Memorial Stadium becomes the state’s second largest city on home game days, then that would put LPS in sixth place.
Lincoln Southeast High school is the largest high school in LPS with 1,983 students. That’s a 10.3% increase since 2010. Lincoln East High School has the smallest enrollment at 1,377.
