Lincoln Police say a criminal was able to steal a local man's credit card information without ever getting a hold of his actual credit card.

Lincoln Police say the criminal came to the South Lincoln Wal-Mart on February 6th with the intent to rack up a big bill. He collected Valentine's cards, snacks, an AT&T card and two American Express cards totaling $350.

LPD Officer Erin Spilker says, "He tried to swipe one card. That card came back declined so then he tried another card and swiped that one and it worked. That one happened to be the victim's card."

The victim is a man from Broken Bow. He learned of the purchase within an hour. "His bank notified him that there had been a charge on his credit card that they weren't sure was an authorized purchase," said Spilker.

The victim was in Broken Bow at the time. So was his credit card.

"The victim was in possession of his card the entire time. The card was never reported stolen and at the time of the report, he still physically had his card in his wallet," said Spilker.

Fortunately, the victim's bank cancelled the card right away. Because two hours later, the suspect tried to use the same card at a Wal-Mart in Nebraska City. Police don't know how the criminal was able to pull off the crime, but believe there are other victims.

"Someone's using the credit cards. They might be carrying multiple cards with them with different names on them. It's possible the cards might be in the suspect's name, or something similar, we're not sure," said Spilker.

But they are sure these crimes can be stopped with one simple action.

"If those businesses train their employees that every time they need to take that credit card after it's swiped to check the name, it could avoid a major loss," said Spilker.

And a major headache for other unsuspecting victims.
