Lincoln Council Closes Protest Loopholes

The Lincoln City Council has closed loopholes that let Occupy protesters maintain their encampment on Centennial Mall for almost seven months.

The rules adopted Monday will bar tents on the city's public land without a permit and will make Centennial Mall a park that closes at 11 p.m.

Occupy protesters left Centennial Mall until May 1, when the city closed the area to the public so contractors would have a staging area for a renovation project.

Occupy protesters say the new rules limit free speech.

The Occupy movement began last year in New York, decrying what protesters see as corporate greed and the growing gap between rich and poor. The Lincoln offshoot took up residence on Oct. 15.
