Fatal industrial site accident.
A 911 call came from the Martin Marrietta limestone mining location south of Weeping at 10:15am Wednesday. A man was pinned underneath an overturned forklift. Fire and rescue volunteers from Weeping Water and Elmwood responded.
The Cassgram reports Cass County Sheriff Wm. C. Brueggemann said preliminary investigation determined Darold D. Abbott, Jr. 52, rural Ashland, was operating a forklift carrying an empty trash dumpster. Abbott was heading downhill towards the entrance to the mine when he lost control of the forklift. The dumpster fell off, and the forklift continued down the hill, striking a concrete base support. The forklift rolled over onto its left side, pinning Abbott. Abbott was pronounced deceased at the scene.
