Melecio Comacho-De Jesus was convicted of first-degree murder for the death of Evelyn Verdugo Paniagua. Evelyn was killed as her family slept in their South Sioux City, Nebraska home. Prosecutors say Camacho broke into her family’s home, sodomized the girl, and suffocated her in an attempt to keep her quiet. His attorney argued that Camacho did not understand his actions the night of the murder because he had cocaine in his system.
Prosecutors argued for the death penalty, noting Camacho killed the girl during a sexual assault. The jury found there were aggravating circumstances that warranted the death penalty.
