The Omaha SummerWorks Academy spent some time in the heat at Columbus Park on Monday. Young men and women cleaned up the park and painted fire lines on the curbs.
Organizers tell WOWT 6 News the academy gives urban youth the chance to learn life skills and discipline for the workplace.
Those involved say they're doing just that.
Don'Kaveon Stapleton said, “Yeah, experience. They teach you how to save your money and how to manage your money and not just waste it. And teach you how to set goals and, yeah, stuff like that.”
Each of the 150 youths participating will leave the program with a letter of recommendation in hopes it will help them get a job or go to school.
