The Davenport Public Library has triggered an uproar after throwing away an estimated 4,000 books over the past two months. The library said it needed the space for new books and materials.
The library's Stephanie Schulte says the library must keep its inventory current but has only a finite amount of space.
She and the rest of the library staff hate the idea of trashing books, too, but they've had a tough time disposing of them otherwise.
The library sales of outdated or unpopular books and materials aren't very successful. And Schulte says that as a public entity, the library is restricted about giving away public property.
