Lawmakers Check On Nebraskans' Access To Social Services

State lawmakers have scheduled a hearing to study whether Nebraska is effectively delivering Medicaid services, food stamps and other public benefits.

The Legislature's Health and Human Services Committee will meet Tuesday to hear from residents who use ACCESSNebraska, the state service that helps them apply for and renew their public benefits.

ACCESSNebraska includes calls centers, kiosks and online services to help residents access their benefits. Lawmakers voted in March to restore in-person services that had been cut, after some users complained about long waits on the phone.

Department of Health and Human Services officials say wait times have declined after a new customer call center opened in Lexington.

The hearing stems from a legislative study by Lincoln Sen. Danielle Conrad.
