Late School Bus Leaves Students In The Cold

Temperatures dipped to 6 degrees Monday morning and an Omaha mother says her teenagers were left out at the bus stop in the cold.

It’s 3 o’clock and the school buses are heading out with students heading home. While it’s currently a cold 24 degrees, this morning it was even colder and that’s why parents, like Dawn Williams, made sure their kids were bundled up. “I told them that it was six degrees out and I told them that they had to dress warm to be at the bus stop.”

What Williams didn’t expect though was for her kids to be outside for so long. “They went to the bus stop and then 20 minutes later they both came in the door saying their bus didn’t show up.”

According to North High School officials the bus, contracted by First Student, was delayed by about 10 minutes because of mechanical issues. While Williams drove her kids to school, a substitute bus picked up other students.

Phil O’Donnell with First Student says issues do arrive on cold mornings and that’s why they have a start up team in place. "They actually start around 4:30 in the morning. They start buses and make sure they crank and run and make sure everything is running in the morning,” said O’Donnell.

O’Donnell says there weren’t any major issues Monday morning and if parents do ever have a question they can call them. Williams says that’s just what she did, but she wishes she would have been contacted right away about the bus delay. "At least contact the parents somehow to let them know the bus is running late and not to let your kids stand out there."

Omaha school officials say if there is a major issue First Student will contact the OPS transportation office, then they will contact the school and the school has a phone dialer system. First student says that doesn’t often happen.

Channel 6 contacted other major school districts in the metro, including Council Bluffs, they said they also did not have any major bus issues.
