A Nebraska inmate was behind the wheel in a fatal crash in a Lincoln neighborhood last night.
Jeremy Dobbe, 35, was assigned as an inmate van driver at the Community Corrections Center in Lincoln.
He's serving 5-7 years for Possession of Meth with Intent to Deliver and Terroristic Threats in Colfax and Butler counties.
The crash happened shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday night east of 17th and Van Dorn St.
Dobbe was driving a white passenger van and heading eastbound when police say he crossed the center line and hit another vehicle.
47-year-old Joyce Meeks tried to swerve out of the way and was t-boned. She died at the scene -- just a couple blocks from home.
Police say they received calls about a white van driving erratically near 10th and Van Dorn St. prior to the crash.
Minutes later, the same white van collided with another car.
Deputy corrections director Frank Hopkins said, "We are saddened by this tragic loss of life and express our deepest sympathies to Ms. Meeks' family."
Corrections officials say it has been policy since the 1980's to have inmate van drivers transport inmates to and from multiple work sites when city buses are not operational.
Dobbe remains in the hospital with injuries that are not considered life threatening.
