Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful Bob Kerrey is portraying Republican Deb Fischer as a bad neighbor because of a lawsuit she filed against an elderly couple.
A new campaign ad released Monday accuses Fischer of trying to take valuable land from the late Les and Betty Kime, her former neighbors in Cherry County.
The ad seizes on a 1995 lawsuit filed by Fischer and her husband. The 104 acres in question belonged to the Kimes, but the Fischers used it for free and with permission to water cattle. The Fischers claimed "adverse possession," a legal term akin to squatter's rights.
Fischer campaign spokesman Daniel Keylin calls the ad "truly pathetic," and says the Fischers' lawyer advised them to clarify the land boundaries through the courts before they sold another land parcel.
