Keeping Teens Safe

Parents got an up-close look at some of the things that may be tempting their teenager and the dangers they face today.

Drugs are found everywhere and that realization has prompted Dawn Masta to come tonight.

Dawn Mastra says, "I know what is our there I was a child once too and I know what they see and I know how easily available this stuff is."

The workshop was presented by the Papillion-La Vista school resource officers. These guys spend more time with the students than almost anyone else.

On Thursday they shared what they've learned with the parents.

Ofc. Brandon Stigge says, "Just some things to notice when you're sitting at home or looking in your kid's car. If they have some air fresheners or you notice some scales or some sticks and stems or you notice some of these Zig Zag papers maybe sitting in your kid's center console that is something you definitely want to be aware of."

Parents learned what the drugs look like and what to look for as far as affects of the various drugs.

The resource officers also told the parents that they have to snoop. Check their children's room and car and personal belongings.

It is a message that Mastra already knows about.

Dawn Mastra says, "We as parents need to be proactive and we need to not be stupid about it."

Because the best way for a parent to help keep their kids out of trouble is to know what to look for before the trouble starts and steer them in another direction.

One of the best sources of information for parents is Facebook.

If your kids are older they probably won't share their password with you but you can still learn a lot by "friending" your teen. For younger kids you can help them set up the account and know their password from the start.
