Judge Vacancy Needs More Applicants

Taking applications for District Court Judge vacancy in the Second Judicial District. One more name is needed for the list of candidates to fill the vacancy. The Honorable Randall L. Rehmeier is retiring.

The Judicial Nominating Commission held its first public hearing on the qualifications of two candidates who previously submitted their names to fill the vacancy, according to Supreme Court Justice Kenneth C. Stephan. At the conclusion of that public hearing, only one of the two candidates for such vacancy received a sufficient number of votes to advance his name to the Governor. (Hugh I. Abrahamson, Bellevue, and Jeffrey J. Funke, Nebraska City, were the two candidates who submitted their names during the first application period.)

The Nebraska Constitution requires that a nominating commission must present to the Governor “a list of at least two nominees” to fill a judicial vacancy. This requirement cannot be met at this time in this case so the Commission is instituting a search for more candidates.

The Cassgram reports applications must be received no later than 5pm Thursday, June 20th. A second public hearing will be held in the Cass County Courthouse in Plattsmouth beginning at 10am on Thursday, July 11.
