Four resolutions of impeachment were introduced in an effort to remove four justices who voted to legalize gay marriage in Iowa. The resolution supporters say the Court overstepped its authority and should have left the issue to the Legislature.
House Speaker Kraig Paulsen (R-Hiawatha) issued the following statement regarding the impeachment resolutions:
“While I agree with much of the reasoning behind the impeachment resolutions, I disagree with this remedy. I do not expect it to be debated on the floor of the House and if it is, I will vote no.
“House Republicans remain focused on reducing government spending and lowering taxes for Iowa families and small businesses.”
When the court ruled in favor of legalizing gay marriage, the ruling was unanimous. Three of the justices who participated in that case have been removed by the voters in last November's election.
