The U.S. Defense Department announced the death of 39-year-old
Sgt. 1st Class Terryl Pasker on Sunday.
Friends of Pasker say he was an upbeat, religious man who planned to start a family with his wife when he retired from the military next year.
The Defense Department says Pasker died Saturday when he was going through a routine security checkpoint.
An Afghan National Directorate security officer manning the checkpoint inexplicably opened fire on the soldier.
Pasker was assigned to the 334th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd
Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division based in Cedar Rapids.
