The Dahl's chain of grocery stores is among the retailers who say the signs are not corporate statements.
Dahl's vice president Tim Davis told The Des Moines Register that the chain put up signs "for the peace of mind for employees and customers. It does not reflect our opinion of the new law."
The new law limits the discretion county sheriffs previously had in denying permits without explanations.
Now, sheriffs may deny applications for specific reasons only, such as prior criminal records or drug or alcohol problems. The sheriffs also must provide
written explanations.
