A body that was found naked outside a Southern California condominium back in 1974 has been identified as a U.S. Marine from Iowa. Oral Stuart, Junior of Des Moines had been listed as a deserter from Camp Pendleton for more than 37 years.
Since the body was found, it was only identified by Long Beach police as “John Doe #155”.
Police recently looking into cold cases suspected that the body may be a member of the military.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service found that tattoos on the body matched those of Stuart, and family members confirmed his identity.
The body was found on November 10, 1974. Twelve days later, the Marines listed Stuart as a deserter. Family members said he never would have voluntarily deserted.
His death has been reclassified as a homicide.
