An Iowa man accused of stealing his own cat from an animal shelter vows to fight the charge.
Justin Kaufman was charged with fifth-degree theft after he allegedly took his cat, Smokey, from the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center.
The cat had gotten loose and was taken to the shelter.
According to the criminal complaint, when a shelter employee went to ask a manager about a potential fee, Kaufmann grabbed Smokey from a cage and took him home. The complaint says Kaufman entered a restricted area to get his cat.
Kaufman says he'll plead not guilty.
Kaufman says Smokey has been sent to live with his sister in to avoid any further issues.
